Canon EOS C500 Mark II
The Canon EOS C500 Mark II is a professional full-frame video camera. The full-frame CMOS sensor features an effective resolution of 18.69 Megapixel, enabling 5.9K video output in full frame. In addition, you can take advantage of crop options for Super 35 and Super 16 image formats whilst retaining high resolution. The C500 Mark II comes with a Canon EF mount and features an interchangeable lens mount system, allowing you to swap the mount for an optional Cinema Locking EF or PL mount. This significantly broadens the range of lenses you can use with the camera. The sensor offers more than 15 stops of dynamic range, supports Dual Pixel Autofocus, and the camera uses a DIGIC DV 7 chip for image processing.
The camera supports internal RAW recording in 12-bit or 10-bit using the Canon Cinema RAW Light codec. You can also capture footage in 10-bit using the XF-AVC codec. Internal recording is handled via the two CFexpress card slots. Any 8-bit proxy recordings in XF-AVC and JPEGs can be saved to an SD card via the built-in SD card slot. A wide variety of gamma settings are supported, including Canon Log 2 and Log 3, as well as a range of colour gamuts including Cinema BT.2020, DCI-P3, and legacy BT.709. LUT import is of course also supported. The camera supports four channels of 24-bit, 48 kHz linear PCM audio recording.
Sensor
The full-frame CMOS sensor captures low-noise images with more than 15 stops of dynamic range. The colour gamut on offer exceeds BT.2020 specifications. Images are captured in a variety of formats, including DCI-4K, UHD, and Anamorphic Widescreen. In addition to recording at the sensor's full frame size, you can use a wide variety of spherical and anamorphic glass. The camera is designed for capturing Super 35mm and Super 16mm using the appropriate crop modes, lens mounts, and adapters.
DIGIC DV 7 Image Processor
The EOS C500 Mark II uses the DIGIC DV 7 image processor, which processes the extensive raw data from the 5.9K sensor. The DIGIC DV 7 enables high frame rate recording, Dual Pixel Auto Focus, Canon RAW Light Recording, HDR (PQ and HLG) output, electronic image stabilisation, proxy recording, and oversampling processing. Thanks to the fast DIGIC DV 7, the camera can simultaneously record 2K proxy files as XF-AVC 2K 4:2:0 8-bit to an SD card whilst saving Cinema RAW Light files (5.9K, 4K recording, or 2K crop) to the internal CFexpress cards.
Interchangeable Lens Mounts
The C500 Mark II comes as standard with a Canon EF lens mount, which works with electronic iris control for a range of Canon EF, ENG, and Canon Cine-Servo lenses. An optional EF Cine Lock mount also features Canon's electronic EF protocols and eliminates play when mounting EF lenses on your camera. An industry-standard PL lens mount is also available, allowing virtually any lens with a PL mount to be used on your C500 Mark II. The lens mounts can be swapped by you, and each mount comes with a set of shim plates for setting the correct depth. An optional B4 lens adapter is available for the PL or EF lens mount; this adapter allows you to use ENG-style lenses with a B4 mount on the C500 Mark II.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Touch AF and Face Detection AF Support
DAF technology takes advantage of the fact that every pixel in the camera's CMOS sensor is configured with two photodiodes. Two independent image signals can then be detected and compared using phase difference to provide autofocus with compatible lenses. DAF can survey the scene and recognises not only whether the subject is in focus or not, but also in which direction (near or far) and by how much. This allows AF lenses to respond when needed, so they don't have to "hunt" for the correct focus.
DAF technology can also be used for manual focusing. Focus information is translated into an on-screen guide that conveys the focus and direction of movement to the operator in order to achieve sharp focus. When sharp focus is achieved, the indicator turns green for a clear confirmation.
You can also use DAF and the camera's touchscreen LCD to simulate a focus pull with preset locations. After setting two separate focus positions on the screen, the camera's dial can be used to switch between the two focus points. The focus rack effect can be refined by adjusting the AF tracking speed and response.
