Tripod Collar

A tripod gimbal is a kind of mount for your lens. That's why long lenses often use one, to support all that weight. With a gimbal head the center of gravity of your lens shifts so its full weight isn't hanging off your camera. That's easier on you — your camera is simpler to hold and steer — and better for the camera too.

How does a tripod collar work?

A tripod collar is a kind of ring that fits around your lens. You use it together with a tripod. You usually attach the tripod collar firmly to your tripod so the lens can rest on it.

Because you often use a tripod collar with larger and heavier lenses, your tripod can become unbalanced. Make sure you fix the tripod collar securely and place one of your tripod legs under the lens. By putting a leg beneath it, the centre of gravity stays balanced.

Tripod collars

The diameter of the tripod collar you choose has to match the lens you're using. When that's the case, shooting with a large lens becomes a real experience. For the photographer, the process is far more relaxed — the weight no longer pulls on the camera. The tripod adapter is locked in place with a screw. The lens is positioned and a whole series of photos can be taken. If you photograph wildlife, this is much quieter. An adapter prevents unintended movements that could create noise.

Shooting with a telephoto lens

Using a telephoto lens delivers sharp images of distant subjects. This makes for excellent landscape shots. Wildlife stays undisturbed in the photo. A photo safari with a telephoto lens helps you create incredible images of wild and dangerous animals. When the focal length is very long, you can no longer hold such a camera by hand. You then need a tripod that's easy to transport, because you obviously don't want to be hindered by weight and size.
