Finding the Serial Number
You’ve got new equipment and want to register it (for warranty or cashback). The serial number is required. But what exactly is the serial number of your camera equipment—and more importantly, how do you find it?
You will usually find it on the equipment itself. Unfortunately, the location differs per camera, lens, and flash unit, so it may take some searching. That’s why we’ve listed the most common locations in this article.
What is a serial number?
A serial number is the ID of your camera, lens, camcorder, or other equipment. It consists of a combination of numbers and/or letters. It does not contain spaces or special characters.
Locations on camera equipment
On cameras
You’ll often find the serial number on the bottom of the camera. Does your camera have a tiltable screen? Then you may find it behind the screen.
On lenses
A lens serial number can be located in three places: on the side of the lens barrel, on the electronic mount, or on the front of the lens.
On camcorders
Just like with cameras, the serial number is usually on the bottom of the camcorder. Can’t find it? Check behind the battery.
On flashes
For flashes, it depends on the model. Most serial numbers can be found on the underside of the flash head, but sometimes also next to the hot shoe.
On battery grips
Battery grip serial numbers are the easiest to find. They are always located on the flat part of the connector or on the bottom next to the tripod mount.
