Right, a list of cameras and specs is nice, but that’s not all there is to it. There are a number of things that are useful to know about a camera, such as the key functions. Fortunately, you can make photography as complicated as you want. Even with simple, or even automatic settings, you can go a long way as a beginner photographer.
Most cameras have a wide range of functions and specifications. As a beginner photographer, you don’t need to know what all of them mean. However, there are a few basic functions that are worth keeping an eye on when choosing your first camera. These are the camera’s zoom range, image stabilisation and video function. The zoom range determines how far you can zoom in. Image stabilisation keeps your images sharp while you move the camera. And if you also want to film with your camera, it needs to have a video function. With this basic knowledge, you’ll already be able to find a good camera to get started with.
User-friendliness may well be the most important factor when choosing a beginner photographer’s first camera. After all, an easy-to-use camera helps you learn faster. Many cameras now have intuitive controls with a user-friendly interface. In addition, many settings can now be adjusted automatically. That’s useful when you’re just starting out with photography. Once you’re a little further along in your learning process, you can of course easily adjust these settings manually to suit your preferences.
When it comes to cameras, we often talk about a body and a lens. These are usually separate from each other. This makes it possible to use different lenses on one body. Do you already have a lens at home, or do you already know what type of lens you want to use? Great! You can then match a body to the lens mount, also known as the ‘mount’. The lens mount is not the same on every camera body. But there are also solutions for this in the form of mount adapters.

When you want to become a photographer, the first step is naturally to choose a camera. Although smartphone cameras are very good nowadays, they can’t match dedicated cameras. Choosing your first camera is often a big challenge for beginner photographers. Have you already thought about what subject you want to photograph? Are you interested in portrait photography, for example, or do you want to capture landscapes? Are you planning to shoot mainly in daylight or in low light? These factors are important to keep in mind when buying your first camera. That’s why we’ve already taken them into account for you in the list below of the best cameras for beginners.
Are you still not entirely sure which camera is right for you? That’s completely understandable. Ideally, you want to test the camera before buying it to check whether it fully meets your requirements and expectations. We have the solution!
Together with our subsidiary Kamera Express Rental (formerly Budgetcam), we make sure you can try out brand-new gear before you decide to buy. Are you already feeling inspired when you see all those beautiful images from others? We completely understand! We’ll give you a few tips to help you get to know your camera, so you’ll be capturing the most beautiful images before you know it.
Take your time and get to know your camera. For example, look at the focusing options and how you can adjust them. It would be a shame to come home with beautiful photos that are all out of focus. Even if you think you know everything about your camera, it may still be full of secrets. Take a look at the manual or search YouTube for videos about your camera. This often helps you discover options you didn’t even know existed. That way, you’ll get the most out of your camera.
The best way to get to know your camera is to practise a lot and take plenty of photos. We challenge you to always take your camera with you. That way, you’ll discover opportunities to capture beautiful shots everywhere. You’ll also learn how to photograph different subjects in a range of lighting conditions. Don’t forget to take several photos of the same subject. Take a step forwards, backwards and sideways. It may seem like a small difference, but it can be what separates a good photo from a great one. You can also learn photography together with others. We often organise workshops and courses for beginner photographers on all kinds of subjects. Curious? Take a look at the calendar and sign up for one of our workshops.
